It started with a used flat file I had seen on eBay for local pickup. It was 46" x 35", a good size, around my area, and only $190 - which I thought was a good price. Those things are not cheap new. I was so ready to buy it, as long as my father was willing to drive his truck to go pick it up, load it, drive it home, unload it, and set it up in the basement. Of course he didn't really want to make a nice 45-60 minute drive if he didn't have to and suggested I look more locally at a used office furniture store he knew of.
That lead to finding a few more used office furniture stores that I didn't even know existed where I live. I know everything in a store like that can't be photographed and cataloged and posted up on a website, because there is just too much and it would take a ton of time. However, the site for one of the stores I was checking out happened to have photos of flat files. I called to inquire about price, size, and availability. I was in luck. Six Mayline C-Files were available, all brought in from an architecture firm. All were the largest size, 53" x 41", priced at $250 each. I've had trouble finding smaller files for that price.
After a short discussion and review of my finances, my father and I went to check them out. The place was literally an old factory being used to store and resell loads of used office furniture. There were chairs, desks, bookcases, filing cabinets, shelving systems, and more items everywhere. We found the man I had spoken with on the phone, and he took us to the flat files. I almost wanted to take them all home. I took two, got them home, cleaned up, and set up in the best available space.
I am definitely happy with what I got, and actually getting the flat files is the start of my studio set up. I've been cleaning my basement, little by little, going through everything down there in order to get a space for myself. More about that another post.
